Gum Health and Alzheimer’s Disease | Dr. Brian Lee

Maintaining healthy gums is crucial not only for your oral health but also for your cognitive function. Recent research has shown a correlation between gum disease and increased cognitive decline in individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. While further studies are required to establish a definitive link, this study highlights the importance of oral health in overall well-being.

Study Details:
Conducted by King’s College London and the University of Southampton, the study involved 59 patients with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Blood tests were used to analyze inflammatory markers in the bloodstream, while dental hygienists assessed the patients’ oral health.

Key Findings:
The study revealed that patients with gum disease experienced cognitive decline at a rate six times faster than those without gum disease. It suggested that the body’s response to inflammation might contribute to the rapid decrease in brain function.

Significance of Healthy Gums:
Previous research has indicated that gum disease can heighten the risk of complications such as heart disease and stroke. Maintaining healthy gums is vital for overall health. You can achieve this by adopting good oral hygiene habits, including brushing your teeth twice daily for two minutes and flossing regularly.

For individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease, maintaining good oral health is essential. If you are a caregiver for someone with the disease, ensure they follow a proper daily oral hygiene routine and schedule regular visits to our office for check-ups. Keeping your gums healthy could be key to preserving both your body and brain health throughout your life.
